服装熨烫工艺的作用主要有四个方面，即成型、烫平、褶裥与粘和。

1、工作服定制之成型
1. Forming of Workwear Customization
它就是利用熨烫来改变服装立体形状的一个过程。理想的工作服造型通过借助熨烫工艺，来改变织物组织密度与纱线形态等结构因素，来达到塑造服装的立体造型的目的。
It is a process of changing the three-dimensional shape of clothing by ironing. Ideal work clothes shape can change the structure factors such as fabric density and yarn shape by ironing process, so as to achieve the goal of three-dimensional garment shape.

褶裥是增进服装审美的一种重要形式。褶裥要求褶痕越耐久越好，而折皱则希望其折痕越不易产生且产生后消失的愈快愈好。褶裥的形式有两种，一种就是单纯利用熨烫工艺，使构成织物的纤维与纱线弯曲而形成褶裥;另一种是所谓的褶裥就是先用开口缝线假缝缝制，而后再用熨烫工艺。

不少工作服需要在一些部位加固一层或几层衬里，以增加服装的身骨与挺扩性。衬里往往都是利用热熔粘合的原理，通过压烫将粘合衬布与服装固为一体的。热熔粘合只要在温度、压力的作用下，经过一段时间来完成。
